Welcome to the ‘L’esprit d’escalier’ blog. We all have moments where we think of a witty comeback just too late and never get chance to say it. This site will act as a receptacle for all those frustrated moments of wit. Show the world the moment that might have been, and give others a chance to use your witticism should they ever find themselves in an identical situation. It’s like karma or something…..

This site is a the result of a drunken conversation between Andy Regan and Bert Wood.

I believe translatiing ‘esprit d’escalier’ as ‘stairway wit’ is FALSE. A much better term would be IMHO ‘belated wisdom’.

FALSE, eh? ‘Belated Wisdom’ would be an interpretive translation – I prefer the more literal one. It would also utterly miss the point of what the original coinage was trying to express.

    FALSE yourself.

‘Wisdom’ also doesn’t seem the right term. It’s not about being wise – it’s about being cutting.
